The Eagle Award

The Thornton Team receiving the Eagle Award.

This past Friday, October 28th, 2016, we attended the annual ABC Excellence in Construction (EIC) Awards Banquet for the Florida East Coast Chapter. The purpose of the EIC Awards competition is to recognize the outstanding projects built by the General Contractor and Craft Trade Contractor members of ABC. Such recognition brings about a greater community and industry awareness of the quality and craftsmanship of work produced. We submitted a project under the Healthcare Division and received the first place Eagle Award. Thank you to all those in the company who participated and made the night memorable.

A New Tradition

A week and a half ago on April 28th, our company participated in the Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run in Miami for the first time ever! What an amazing experience! There were a total of about 17 people that joined our company team including guests. We had custom t-shirts ordered from CustomInk which came out great.  We looked like a real team!

A few of the team members gathering at our meeting place.

We didn’t get to start all together as we had 2 seeded runners, a CEO, runners, and walkers but we planned on meeting up before and after the race.  By 5:30pm, our team started making it to our pre-race meeting spot East of Pepper Fountain.  We took a few pictures, chatted, and met each other’s guests. The announcers began asking all participants to line up in the different corrals at 6:15pm as the race was scheduled to begin at 6:45pm sharp.

A couple more team members found us.

There were a ton of spectators everywhere taking pictures of the huge mob of racers about to begin. First up were the participants in wheelchairs. Those guys were hardcore and did a great job! About 5 minutes after that, the gun went off for the seeded runners and CEOs.  Following that, the remaining runners started and, finally, the walkers.

The race was a short 5km run but it was fast and tough.  We all went out as hard as we could and made it to the finish line in one piece.  I’m happy to report that we had no injuries occur but I think we were all VERY sore the next day at work.  After the race, we met up again at Hooters in Bayside for celebratory food and drinks.  We had a great time laughing, recounting our experiences during the race and eating lots and lots and lots of food: wings, sliders, fries, onion rings, loaded nachos, shrimp. Yum.

Thank you to everyone who participated.  Our team wouldn’t have been the same without you.  Can’t wait for next year!

Team Thornton – It’s a celebration! We made it!

Take the Extra Step

Safety is one of the most important things to be conscious of on all construction sites. So many slogans have been created to bring awareness that it MUST be important: Safety first. Your life depends on it. It’s everybody’s business. Safety begins with teamwork. The safe way is the best way. Safety is everybody’s job.

Every year, Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) presents the Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) award. This award is a merit based safety recognition that was established in 1989 by the ABC National Environment, Health and Safety Committee.

We would like to congratulate our Thornton team on receiving the Gold Level ABC STEP Award for the 2015 year. Our teams on the field continue to do a great job year after year to make sure safety is on the top of the priority list.

At the end of the day, the goals are simple: safety and security.

Racing for the Kids

Two weekends ago, our company had the pleasure of participating in the Tour de Broward. We rode our bicycles, ran our sneakers off, and ate delicious food all for a great cause. The event takes place every year at Miramar Regional Park. This year, we had 2 participants doing the 50 km ride and 7 participants for the 5 km run. The team met up after their events in the sponsor’s tent to relax and enjoy all the amazing, fresh food being offered. Thank you to everyone that participated and made the day eventful!

Our company’s goal for next year’s Tour de Broward: Have a blast again!

History of Tour de Broward

For the past six years on a Sunday morning in February, thousands of people have gathered at Miramar Regional Park, united by one common cause – to support Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital at its annual Tour de Broward event. Now in its seventh year, the need is greater than ever to raise funds for South Broward’s only pediatric hospital, which has become the leading children’s hospital in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. In 2014’s fiscal year alone, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital served children and their families in 53,450 outpatient visits, 8,707 admissions and observations and 6,039 pediatric surgeries.

What the Tour de Broward Supports

Funds from previous years have supported the hospital’s Heart Institute, which provides children with a complete continuum of care from diagnosis to repair of congenital defects and other cardiac dysfunctions. It houses the Pediatric Heart Transplant Program, one of only two of its kind in South Florida. Funds have also supported programs for the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, helping to improve the lives of many oncology patients and families. However, the need is greater this year because funds raised will help support programs throughout Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, as it aims to grow in the community and continue to expand services.

We’re green. Are you?

We are very excited to announce that our company joined the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) as a member! Many of our staff are LEED Accredited Professionals and, as a company, we experienced obtaining a Gold certification from the USGBC for a new construction building. Becoming a member was the next step to showing our dedication to environmentally conscious building.

Throughout most of our jobs, we’ve adopted green practices regardless of whether or not the project calls for certification. Thornton Construction supports green building design and is committed to reducing our carbon footprint one building at a time.

Technology at Work

The “online world” is a great source of information and can help with just about anything. Today, I joined the executives in my company for an online meeting and I was amazed at how far we’ve come as a company.  Technology has given us the freedom to be mobile within our offices which is quite convenient.  We don’t have to physically be in meetings anymore to be part of the conversation.  Video conferencing has paved the way for ease in communication between our two offices and outside consultants.

Advancements in Project Management software and websites have also created  a more efficient work flow process.  Transferring project specific information and pictures is now much easier.  Important project files and images can be stored and found faster.  Each project is set up the same way providing consistency for our teams between projects.

We all like to save time and be as productive at work as possible so it’s important to keep up-to-date with the latest technology.  There’s always something new and better to help your company success but many companies fear change. As JFK once said, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future”.

Goodbye 2015!

It’s a great new year! Hello 2016!

It’s a great new year! Hello 2016!

As the new year begins, we look back and reflect on the last year.  Thornton Construction had a great 2015 with lots of growth.  Here are a few highlights:

  • Opened a new Broward office
  • Entered a new sector with a few residential construction projects
  • Revamped the company organizational chart
  • Hired key personnel
  • Improved employee benefits package
  • Focused on backlog expansion
  • Acquired social media
  • Honed in on our core values and mission statement

And the list can go on and on.

We are all very proud of what we were able to accomplish this year.  Our President, Tom Thornton, wrote a list of goals at the beginning of the year and kept the list handy as a reminder of where the company was headed.  As each goal was reached and completed, he would strike it off of the list with great satisfaction.  The goal for 2015 was to work towards growing the company and allowing it to be an enjoyable workplace for all employees.  We are definitely working towards the big picture and have climbed up the ladder significantly.

2016 is looking to be another great year of growth and progression.  There are many new things in the works that will create more efficiency throughout the company and we are all very excited to see those things come to fruition.  None of these things would be possible without the support and patience of our amazing team.  Thank you to everyone in the company for all that you do.  You are the reason Thornton Construction is succeeding and expanding at such an incredible rate.
