Thornton was hired to complete this project after the previous general contractor encountered several challenges with the scope and size of the project. Located in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, this Section 8 building made headlines when 80 tenants were forced to evacuate the building prior to Hurricane Irma hitting South Florida. After the storm passed, Miami building officials ruled that water damage had made the towers uninhabitable and therefore the residents were not able to inhabit their homes and had to be relocated to hotels. The scope of work consisted of the replacement of the entire exterior envelope of the building; in addition, the interior of the building was gutted, new apartments units were built and the interior and exterior common areas were re-built. The project was built under a Fast-Track Construction process resulting in a total of ten month construction duration.
