The scope of work consisted of the demolition of the restroom facility located at Lummus Park (6th street) and the construction of a new 1,500 SF facility. Also included in the scope was the demolition of the restroom facility and Ocean Rescue office located at 53rd street, and the construction of a new 864 SF restroom facility and a new 546 SF office for the Ocean Rescue Department. Around 50 new water-efficient plumbing fixtures were installed. Furthermore, a significant amount of sitework was performed totaling around 23,000 SF. The site work entailed concrete walkways to connect the parking lots to the entrances, as well as to the beach, existing playground, and outdoor fitness circuit. Extensive landscape beautification was performed as well. Lastly, since the Ocean Rescue Department occupied a room inside the facility that was demolished, Thornton was also responsible for the temporary relocation of these end-users.
The materials that were used are of premium quality in order to withstand the impact created by the environment and vandalism, and reduce maintenance and replacement costs. Additionally, a large number of sustainable LEED-like practices were utilized. Examples include: USGBC certified epoxy flooring, low VOC paint, LEED compliant toilet partitions, green spec-approved hand dryers, low solar reflective index value roofing material, and others.
