Palm & Hibiscus Garages Fire Protection

Overview

Thornton Construction was responsible for the procurement and installation of fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems for the 4-story Palm and 7-story Hibiscus Parking Garages at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The wet pipe sprinkler systems covered 2,431,000 linear feet. The project was initiated by Broward County Commissioners after being notified by their County Fire Marshall that the construction of the Cypress Car Rental facility prevented them from driving fire emergency trucks into the Palm and Hibiscus parking garages. The Fire Marshall was unable to issue a Certificate of Occupancy to the Cypress Car Rental facility unless the County agreed to fully sprinkle both the Palm and Hibiscus garages. Previously, the Palm Parking Garage was equipped with wet pipe fire hose cabinets only in the perimeter stairwells, and the Hibiscus Parking Garage had wet pipe fire hose cabinets along the perimeter and interior.
