Overview
Thornton Construction renovated 9,347 square feet of the 3rd floor suite and added a 20 patient bed Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit to complement the existing 20 bed 2nd floor Level II Unit. This Level III NICU can care for the smallest and sickest of newborn babies, as young as 22 weeks of gestational age. The new North elevator will transport patients and families from the security check point on the 2nd floor, while the South elevator will transport staff and critical patients between 2nd and 3rd floors. The unit is equipped with a Hugs Security System which protects against infant abduction. This 3rd floor unit includes a “Parent Room” to hose families of extended stay patients that’s includes a private bathroom.
The renovation included selective demolition, misc. concrete, cabinetry and millwork, three-form surfaces, doors and hardware, glass and glazing in HM frames, automatic slider doors, window tinting, rubber sheet flooring, epoxy terrazzo flooring, carpet, drywall, paint, ceramic wall tile, acoustical ceiling, wall protection, toilet accessories, roller window shades, electric traction elevator shafts had to be closed coordinated with the nurses on the 2nd floor due to the loud noises affecting NICU patients on the floor below, causing sudden drops and spikes in heart rates.
